Looking at Mean-Payoff and Total-Payoff through Windows

چکیده
We consider two-player games played on weighted directed graphs with mean-payoff and total-payoff objectives, two classical quantitative objectives. While for single-dimensional games the complexity and memory bounds for both objectives coincide, we show that in contrast to multi-dimensional meanpayoff games that are known to be coNP-complete, multi-dimensional total-payoff games are undecidable. We introduce conservative approximations of these objectives, where the payoff is considered over a local finite window sliding along a play, instead of the whole play. For single dimension, we show that (i) if the window size is polynomial, deciding the winner takes polynomial time, and (ii) the existence of a bounded window can be decided in NP ∩ coNP, and is at least as hard as solving mean-payoff games. For multiple dimensions, we show that (i) the problem with fixed window size is EXPTIME-complete, and (ii) there is no primitive-recursive algorithm to decide the existence of a bounded window.

Games through Nested Fixpoints
In this paper we consider two-player zero-sum payoff games on finite graphs, both in the deterministic as well as in the stochastic setting. In the deterministic setting, we consider total-payoff games which have been introduced as a refinement of mean-payoff games [18, 10]. In the stochastic setting, our class is a turn-based variant of liminf-payoff games [15, 16, 4]. In both settings, we pro...
متن کاملGames Where You Can Play Optimally Without Any Memory
Reactive systems are often modelled as two person antagonistic games where one player represents the system while his adversary represents the environment. Undoubtedly, the most popular games in this context are parity games and their cousins (Rabin, Streett and Muller games). Recently however also games with other types of payments, like discounted or mean-payoff [5,6], previously used only in...
متن کاملQuantitative Games with Interval Objectives
Traditionally quantitative games such as mean-payoff games and discount sum games have two players – one trying to maximize the payoff, the other trying to minimize it. The associated decision problem, “Can Eve (the maximizer) achieve, for example, a positive payoff?” can be thought of as one player trying to attain a payoff in the interval (0,∞). In this paper we consider the more general prob...
متن کاملWindow Parity Games: An Alternative Approach Toward Parity Games with Time Bounds (Full Version)
Classical objectives in two-player zero-sum games played on graphs often deal with limit behaviors of infinite plays: e.g., mean-payoff and total-payoff in the quantitative setting, or parity in the qualitative one (a canonical way to encode ω-regular properties). Those objectives offer powerful abstraction mechanisms and often yield nice properties such as memoryless determinacy. However, thei...
